NIHR Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permission (CSP)

The NIHR Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permission (CSP) is a new system that will standardise and streamline the process for gaining NHS permission for clinical research studies in England which are eligible for the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio. (See http://www.crncc.nihr.ac.uk/index/clinical/portfolio_new.html for portfolio eligibility criteria).

CSP was developed in consultation across the clinical research community and has been piloted throughout the NHS over the last few months.  It will ensure that the relevant quality assurance and statutory requirements are met whilst reducing approval times and cutting bureaucracy by allowing active management and tracking of applications via a national database.

CSP was introduced for new applications for NHS permission from 18 November 2008 and is accessible via IRAS.  For all NON-portfolio studies, researchers should continue to use local R&D approval systems.
